The lush, sprawling grounds of the Leriba conference centre, with its wide variety of indigenous flora and fauna, was accentuated all the more by the unseasonably warm spring weather. In the course of the four day event, an array of provocative analyses on subjects ranging from Dionysius I of Syracuse to Cicero to John Chrysostom came together, united in a shared concern to elucidate the phenomenon of the reimagining of historical narratives and collective memory by influential agents in Antiquity. The 19th UNISA Classics Colloquium "Making and Unmaking Memory in the Ancient World", organised in collaboration with the ARC Discovery Project Memories of Utopia, was a thought-provoking and productive success.
Further highlights of the conference included a meet-and-greet with the faculty of UNISA's Department of Biblical and Ancient Studies, an excursion to a game reserve, and a trip to the famous Union buildings in Pretoria. Many thanks to the organisers, Drs. Martine de Marre and Chris de Wet, and UNISA for a pleasant and enjoyable collegial gathering!
Drs. Martine de Marre and Rajiv Bhola are presently collaborating on a publication proposal for the peer-reviewed proceedings of the conference. More to come!
