When Cultures Clash?

Trace & Space in Ancient Israel

On the 21st of November 2018, the Museum of Ancient Cultures (MQ) celebrated the opening of their new exhibit, When Cultures Clash? - a collaborative effort between the Museum and the Professional and Community Engagement Program (PACE), with support from the Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE).

Upon entering the new dedicated space in the museum, attendees are immediately greeted by the bold thematic title of the exhibit, emblazoned high above, intriguing and beckoning them to explore the curiosities within. Every wall, from corner to corner, is decked with artefacts ranging in provenance and socio-cultural import which were recovered during Macquarie University associated digs, each complemented with plaques providing essential contextual details.

At the far end of the room - the feature generating the greatest amount of attention - is a true testament to efforts which contributed to the creation of this exhibit. Projected on the wall is a time-lapse video of the Macquarie University dig at Khirbet el-Rai, showing step-by-step the unearthing of the site. And resting on a table beside it: a virtual reality headset, allowing viewers the unique opportunity to explore a stage of that dig in free-roaming, high-definition 3D.

The occasion was commemorated with a collegial wine-and-cheese and presentations by Macquarie University students and faculty on various artefacts, their history, and their significance.

Congratulations to the curators Eva Rummery, Mitchell Currell, Penny Edwell, and Dr. Eve Guerry, and to all who participated, on a successful grand opening!
